SOLUTION for gfsptiles/gfs not being available or too slow

Post by meteoadriatic » Mon Aug 19, 2013 2:55 pm

OK I switched to NOMADS http server and it is fast. Here is url for full grib2 GFS files:

http://nomads.ncep.noaa.gov/pub/data/nccf/com/gfs/prod

I also modified some EMS files to be able to use this instead of original NOAA server. Here is what I did:

1) Copy $EMS/conf/grib_info/gfs_gribinfo.conf to $EMS/conf/grib_info/gfs-nomads_gribinfo.conf

2) Edit $EMS/conf/grib_info/gfs-nomads_gribinfo.conf
a) go around line 291 and comment out those original SERVER-FTP and SERVER-HTTP entries
b) below them, add this line:

Code: Select all

SERVER-HTTP = NOMADS:/pub/data/nccf/com/gfs/prod/gfs.YYYYMMDDCC/gfs.tCCz.pgrb2fFF
3) Edit $EMS/conf/ems_prep/prep_global.conf
Around line 42, add this line:

Code: Select all

NOMADS   = nomads.ncep.noaa.gov
Now, you can use "gfs-nomads" for your DSETS value in ems_autorun.conf or however you usually set DSETS.

This guide works on EMS v3.1 but I think it should also with newer versions. Feel free to add something if I missed.

I don't have solution for gfsptiles.

On V3.4 nomads is already set in prep_global.conf.

I tested this way yesterday on V3.4 and it doesn't work...

Yes there is NOMADS entry in prep_global.conf from v3.4, but did you created new dset file to be able to force using it (steps 1 and 2 in my guide)?

I'll test it in the next run soon...

Is the grib in /pub/data/nccf/com/gfs/prod/gfs.YYYYMMDDCC/gfs.tCCz.pgrb2fFF are 1 or 0.5 degrees? I think this is 1°, but WRF needs 0.5°??

They are 0.5°. GFS forecast grib2 files with file size ~50MB are 0.5°. 1° versions are much smaller.
