I have to correct myself here, yes there is MODIS landuse 30s data for Europe. I just tried and it is different than USGS, much different.
Are you sure? When i add modis_30s+30s to geog_data_res i get lot`s of "couldn't find modis_30s data source." in geogrid.log.

Yes, pretty much different. Look at comparision:

left is USGS, right is MODIS, differences are clear. You can also see from ncview UI that USGS domain file had 24 LU_INDEX categories and MODIS file had 17 LU_INDEX categories.

You get only landuse from MODIS, everything else from USGS. That's why you see lot of errors, it is normal.

When setting in namelist.input
num_land_cat = 20,
like is in instruction:
number of landuse categories in input data. 24 – USGS; 20 – MODIS; 28 – USGS+lake; 21 – MODIS+1
When i run real.exe domain 1 goes without errors, and when nested domain 2 is processed there is error:

Code: Select all

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

 Domain 2: Current date being processed: 2012-04-29_12:00:00.0000, which is loop # 1 out of 25
 configflags%julyr, %julday, %gmt:        2012         120   12.000000
  metgrid input_wrf.F first_date_input = 2012-04-29_12:00:00
  metgrid input_wrf.F first_date_nml = 2012-04-29_12:00:00
 ----------------- ERROR -------------------
 namelist    : NUM_LAND_CAT =         20
 input files : NUM_LAND_CAT =         24 (from geogrid selections).
 -------------- FATAL CALLED ---------------
 FATAL CALLED FROM FILE: <stdin> LINE: 627
 Mismatch between namelist and wrf input files for dimension NUM_LAND_CAT
 -------------------------------------------
So telling me to change back to the 24. But then when domain 1 is processed, shows a similar error:

Code: Select all

 -----------------------------------------------------------------------------

 Domain 1: Current date being processed: 2012-04-29_12:00:00.0000, which is loop # 1 out of 25
 configflags%julyr, %julday, %gmt:        2012         120   12.000000
  metgrid input_wrf.F first_date_input = 2012-04-29_12:00:00
  metgrid input_wrf.F first_date_nml = 2012-04-29_12:00:00
 ----------------- ERROR -------------------
 namelist    : NUM_LAND_CAT =         24
 input files : NUM_LAND_CAT =         20 (from geogrid selections).
 -------------- FATAL CALLED ---------------
 FATAL CALLED FROM FILE: <stdin> LINE: 627
 Mismatch between namelist and wrf input files for dimension NUM_LAND_CAT
 -------------------------------------------
I can`t use different num_land_cat for every domain.

Why do you try to use different sets for domains?

In fact, for NMM you can't anyway use different landmask, landuse, etc for mother domain and for nests, because everything except terrain height is pulled from mother domain into all nests. But also for ARW I see only one parameter in namelist for num_land_cat, so it is probably that way by design that you must use same landuse set for all domains.

I tried namelist with modis in both domains. Real.exe wants different NUM_LAND_CAT for both domains when modis is set in both. But it`s imposible, because NUM_LAND_CAT is not max domain set.

Strange, I don't have this issue. I'm now running NMM test on modis, two domains, everything works normal. That is in EMS 3.1 environment using my v3.4 ifort binary builds. I changed in master namelist.nmm data/tables/wrf/namelist.nmm num_land_cat to 20 and it works.

I've got EMS 3.1 and the domain wizard doesn't have a "use MODIS" option.
How do I make a domain that uses MODIS topography?

I recommend that you use ems_domain.pl script to create domains. First manually make changes to static/namelist.wps then run ems_domain.pl --locdom <domainname>. To set modis this is relevant part in namelist.wps:

Code: Select all

geog_data_res              = 'modis_30s+2m', 'modis_30s+30s'
That is example for two domain setup.

Have I told you that you're a legend? I don't think so. You're a legend man!

Btw I also had to change
num_land_cat = 24
to
num_land_cat = 20

in $EMS_HOME/data/tables/wrf/namelist.nmm

I'll post my first run results soon, stay tuned ;)
