I guess that you put wgrib from opengrads Contents directory? This is perl script, you need wgrib binary that is located here: <opengradsdir>/Contents/Linux/Versions/2.0.1.oga.1/x86_64/wgrib :)

Let's recap:

from opengrads package

- gribmap => $EMS/util/grads
- wgrib => $EMS/bin
- grib2ctl.pl => $EMS/util/grads/bin

but I continue to not see the idx file but the ctl file has been correctly made

OK... now is time to try it manually

cd into runs/domainname/emsprd/grads

delete ctl file, then execute

grib2ctl.pl -verf gribfilename.grb > gribfilename.ctl
gribmap -big -i gribfilename.ctl

and watch for printed errors...

Here you are the error for the first command:
emsuser@ns364409-> sudo $EMS/util/grads/bin/grib2ctl.pl -verf 201111040000_arw_wrfout_d01.grb > 201111040000_arw_wrfout_d01.ctl
sh: wgrib: command not found
Big problem: Possible causes:
201111040000_arw_wrfout_d01.grb does not exist (bad name? wrong directory?)
201111040000_arw_wrfout_d01.grb is not a grib file
cannot write a temporary file /tmp/g25683.tmp (permissions? full disk?)
wgrib was not found (wgrib not on path, wrong directory?) :idea:
wgrib was compiled for a different machine or operating system

First, please don't use sudo for starting user's jobs. Try again without sudo, it might find wgrib then.

I have found something...

gribmap file was the wrong one. Now it is correct (binary... my fault)

after, I modified the grib2ctl.pl file and I have entered the entire directory of wgrib and it works.

if I send the command "ems_post --grads --nogrib" I have:
II. Creating GrADS control and index files from domain 01 WRF GRIB data


* Combining individual grib files into a single monolithic file - 201111040000_arw_wrfout_d01.grb

* Creating GrADS control file - 201111040000_arw_wrfout_d01.ctl - You Go GrADS!
* Creating GrADS index file - 201111040000_arw_wrfout_d01.idx - Failed (gribmap code 256) No GrADS Love for You!

and I see a ctl and a grb file correctly in the emsprd/grads directory but no idx file.

Finally, the command:

emsuser@ns364409-> gribmap -big -i 201111040000_arw_wrfout_d01.ctl
Open Error: Unknown keyword in description file
--> The invalid description file record is:
--> Undefined parameter table (center 7-0 table 201), using NCEP-opn
The data file was not opened.

any idea?

Is it possible to divide the file and to create two smaller different grb file? For example with a restart function... I don't know...!

No idea yet.

Does you have problems (errors in creating idx) if you create little file (let's say only 3 hours of run length)? If it still fails, could you upload that grib file so I can take a look at it?
