No categorical precipitation from WRF-ARW and UPP3.0 - Quick help needed

No categorical precipitation from WRF-ARW and UPP3.0 - Quick help needed

Hello,

I have some problems with the categorical precipitation fields from UPPV3.0. I am using WRF-ARW with WSM-6 microphysics, so I should have elements like rain, snow, ice etc.

I have tried anything in the wrf_cntrl.parm file, but nothing solves my problem... The only thing I can find in the log files (e.g. unipost_d01.05.out) are the following errors:

Error: -1021 CUTOP not found in ***/wrfout_d01_2016-11-14_05:00:00
Error: -1021 CUBOT not found in ***/wrfout_d01_2016-11-14_05:00:00
Error: -1021 CUPPT not found in ***/wrfout_d01_2016-11-14_05:00:00
Error: -1021 TKE not found in ***/wrfout_d01_2016-11-14_05:00:00
Error: -1021 CUTOP not found in ***/wrfout_d01_2016-11-14_05:00:00
Error: -1021 CUBOT not found in ***/wrfout_d01_2016-11-14_05:00:00
Error: -1021 CUPPT not found in ***/wrfout_d01_2016-11-14_05:00:00
Error: -1021 TKE not found in ***/wrfout_d01_2016-11-14_05:00:00

And another trillion errors like these
*** = path to wrf_out files

RAINC, RAINNC, SNOWNC, GRAUPELNC etc. are present.

Currently I have no idea what I have to do to get these elements in my wrfout* files. I think that the problem with categorical precipitation is caused by these errors, but I'm not sure. Actually, I do have these fields in my WRF-NMM core model setup, and do have ones and zeroes in my categorical precipitation fields.

My conclusion is that I'm missing several elements in my wrfout* files. I have no idea how to get these elements in the netcdf-output file. Does anybody have any suggestions?

I'm not sure if ARW has categorical precipitation output possibility (in state 0 or 1). You might want to look into Registry file to find out.

But depending on your needs there is potentially better solution. You can output rain, snow, graupel amount.. on any model surface (or pressure surface if you want).

In wrf_cntrl.parm, look for those:

(RAIN ON MDL SFCS ) SCAL=( 6.0)
L=(00000 00000 00000 00000 00000 00000 00000 00000 00000 00000 00000 00000 00000 00000)
(SNOW ON MDL SFCS ) SCAL=( 6.0)
L=(00000 00000 00000 00000 00000 00000 00000 00000 00000 00000 00000 00000 00000 00000)
(GRAUPEL ON MDL SFCS ) SCAL=( 6.0)
L=(00000 00000 00000 00000 00000 00000 00000 00000 00000 00000 00000 00000 00000 00000)



If you want to have amount of each on lowest model level (near the ground), do this:

(RAIN ON MDL SFCS ) SCAL=( 6.0)
L=(10000 00000 00000 00000 00000 00000 00000 00000 00000 00000 00000 00000 00000 00000)
(SNOW ON MDL SFCS ) SCAL=( 6.0)
L=(10000 00000 00000 00000 00000 00000 00000 00000 00000 00000 00000 00000 00000 00000)
(GRAUPEL ON MDL SFCS ) SCAL=( 6.0)
L=(10000 00000 00000 00000 00000 00000 00000 00000 00000 00000 00000 00000 00000 00000)


(you also have similar for pressure surfaces if you want them)

Now you will have something like RWMRhy1, SNMRhy1, ... (or similar name) variable in grib file with descriptions like "hybrid level Rain Mixing Ratio [kg/kg]", and so on. So you have amount of precipitation in required form at lowest model level.

Now for example;
If RWMRhy1 is = 0, it is the same as categorical rain = 0. If RWMRhy1 is > 0, it is the same as categorical rain = 1. And so on for other variables.

The system is now doing the regular operational runs, so I wil check it later today. When I get some usefull output, I will let it know!
