OpenMeteoData - Free weather data for everyone - Joins us!

Post by nicoOMD » Tue Jan 15, 2013 6:26 am

Hi,

Here's is OpenMeteoData.

This is a non profit organization about :
- building a big cluster for providing free WRF data to everyone.
- fighting for free access to public meteorological data

If you needs forecasts for europe, I advice joining our big infrasctructure instead of building your own small run.

Projects details at http://openmeteodata.org/

Hello,
I did not understand whether you provide CPU/data access for everybody's own WRF / EMS WRF run or a unique weather forecast run by the members of your association.

Hi

I offer joining in a single big run.

Hello,

this is interesting idea. Can you explain how do you plan to create so big computer resources (by building cluster over Internet, or?). And also what are the conditions that needs to be met for new users, what do they need to participate and what they get in return?

Thanks and good luck with your project!

Hi,
Can you explain how do you plan to create so big computer resources (by building cluster over Internet, or?).
Building an HPC cluster. It needs to be in a single place, because of nodes interconnection. (using high performance infiniband link)

It got several sponsorships :
- free datacenter hosting / energy / bandwidth.
- big money to buy the first computes nodes.

then, looking for donations from users. Think about it : how mary are we to run the WRF in Europe ? how many computer does it requires ? what if all those computers were linked in the same place ?..

instead of buying your own server for a small wrf, donate to us for a big one.
And also what are the conditions that needs to be met for new users
Nothing. You can just come and grab the data you want for free.
See ODbL license : http://opendatacommons.org/licenses/odbl/
what do they need to participate
To contribute, you can :
  • - speak about the project
    - use our data
    - help us write a wiki documentation about how to use WRF data
    - spread the political debate about national agencies data access
    - advice us on models configuration
    - donate hardware or money to get more processing power
    - seek for sponsorships
    - ...
what they get in return?
More people involved, and more computing power = better forecasts

And if we are a lot of people complaining about european public agencies data policy, we could trigger a big political debate, and gain free access to ECMWF and others.

Ok, but if so, everybody being involved should participate to the parametrization (domains, physics...)

Yes, that's an open and democratic project.
Parametrization will be discussed publicly.

And, if we got sufficient computing power, we could even imagine running several different configurations, to make some kind of "ensemble" run.

Here's our TODO list, for people wanting to help / talk (including parametrization):
