nomad tiles larger than ptiles from ems system ?

With soon inclusion of the NEMS NMM-B model into the EMS package, WRF EMS changes its name and becomes UEMS.

nomad tiles larger than ptiles from ems system ?

Post by alfe » Wed Jul 26, 2017 4:44 pm

Hello,
As stated in the title, despite the grib filter I have set on the grib files from Nomad server, Nomad files are still larger than uems ptiles files. uems gives 6 MB and equivalent Nomad gives 12 MB. I have no idea why ?

I think that I have selected only necessary fields but...

This is before the GFS update so if you read the below lines, don't mind about post GFS update.

nomads.ncep.noaa.gov/cgi-bin/filter_gfs_0p25_1hr.pl?file=gfs.t00z.pgrb2.0p25.f000&lev_0-0.1_m_below_ground=on&lev_0.1-0.4_m_below_ground=on&lev_0.4-1_m_below_ground=on&lev_1_mb=on&lev_1000_mb=on&lev_100_m_above_ground=on&lev_100_mb=on&lev_10_m_above_ground=on&lev_10_mb=on&lev_1-2_m_below_ground=on&lev_150_mb=on&lev_2_mb=on&lev_200_mb=on&lev_20_mb=on&lev_250_mb=on&lev_2_m_above_ground=on&lev_3_mb=on&lev_300_mb=on&lev_30_mb=on&lev_350_mb=on&lev_400_mb=on&lev_450_mb=on&lev_5_mb=on&lev_500_mb=on&lev_50_mb=on&lev_550_mb=on&lev_600_mb=on&lev_650_mb=on&lev_7_mb=on&lev_700_mb=on&lev_70_mb=on&lev_750_mb=on&lev_800_mb=on&lev_80_m_above_ground=on&lev_850_mb=on&lev_900_mb=on&lev_925_mb=on&lev_950_mb=on&lev_975_mb=on&lev_max_wind=on&lev_mean_sea_level=on&lev_surface=on&lev_tropopause=on&var_HGT=on&var_ICEC=on&var_LAND=on&var_MSLET=on&var_PRES=on&var_PRMSL=on&var_RH=on&var_SNOD=on&var_SOILW=on&var_TMP=on&var_TSOIL=on&var_UGRD=on&var_VGRD=on&var_WEASD=on&subregion=&leftlon=-49&rightlon=37.75&toplat=72&bottomlat=32.50&dir=%2Fgfs.2017070900

Has anybody the same experience ?

Thanks

Maybe different grib2 packing? Try wgrib2 png.grb2 -packing to see how they are packed.

I concur that the nomads tiles are double the size of the uems ptiles. I am using smaller domains so I don't really mind the slightly longer download time.

I noticed your request for the Nomads data and the var LANDN is missing. You will need this to get correct masking after the GFS upgrade. Otherwise you will notice surface temperature artifacts near coastlines.
