Simulation from older RUC data - HELP

Post by BCHurricane89 » Sat Nov 17, 2012 12:20 am

So, I am trying to run a simulation of an event for my mesoscale class, and I am having issues getting the data ingested into the program to be used as initialization files. I downloaded RUC data from the NOAA NOMADS site which is in the following format:
ruc2_130_20100522_2100_003.grb2

I put these files in the runs/runname/grib folder.
I was trying to pass the following command for the ems prep:
ems_prep --dset ruc13hf:ftp:local --date 20100522 --cycle 21:00:08:01

It says it cant find the files, and I believe because the file naming convention is different from those in the grib_info folder. How do I go about doing this, because I am clearly doing something not right. I want to run an 8 hour simulation from the 21 Z RUC data as initializations, and hourly BC's as well. I'm pretty sure it has something to do with the dest option. Anyone have any ideas?

Hello,

you need to go into wrfems/conf/grib_info and find corresponding .conf file, open it and near bottom find field LOCFIL = ...

Then adjust, either this field so it reflects file names of your downloaded files, or, rename your files so they reflect this field.

Hope this helps!

Well, after some research and talking with a friend, it was found out that RUC data from the NOMADS site doesn't work - you need the hybrid coordinate data sets which I cannot find (At least not archived back to 2010).

So, I decided to go with the NAM 218 grid (12km) I'm using the 18Z run, and a 12 hour forecast. I got the ems_prep command to work, and go to run ems_run, and it starts, but fails with the following error:

WRF EMS Program ems_run (V3.2.1.5.45.beta) started on localhost at Sat Nov 24 02:08:02 2012 UTC

The WRF EMS Says: "Who's Awesome? You're Awesome!"

I. Preforming configuration in preparation for your EMS experience

* You are running the WRF ARW core. Hey Ho! Let's go! - model'n!

* Simulation start and end times:

Domain Start End

1 2010-05-22_18:00:00 2010-05-23_06:00:00

* Simulation length will be 12 hours

* Large timestep to be used for this simulation is 5 seconds

II. Creating the initial and boundary condition files for the user domain(s)

* The WRF REAL program shall be run on the following systems and processors:

4 processors on localhost (1 tiles per processor)

* Creating the WRF initial and boundary condition files

EMS ERROR : UGH! Creation of model initial and boundary conditions failed!

I hate when this #%^!#!!% happens.

Hopefully nobody was hurt during this attempt!

! A little help from your friend at EMS world headquarters

The log files from your failed run have been written to:

Feel free to send them to a person that cares if you need some assistance
troubleshooting this problem.

For archived RUC data (Hybrid Cords) you might want to check out: http://www.arm.gov/data/datastreams/ruc20hybr It is however only analysis data (00hr), so it very well may not fit your needs.
