New "WRF" EMS coming?

Post by Boogie » Sun Jan 22, 2012 12:39 pm

The WRF EMS website has received a new look apparently:
http://strc.comet.ucar.edu/software/newrems/

If I read this correctly, WRF EMS will receive a new name and during Spring a new version would become available sporting the new model NEMS NMM-B as well.

"The name change is necessitated by the inclusion of the NEMS NMM-B model into the EMS package."
Sounds good!

I recently became a friend with one of chief NMMB developers and as we chatted about it, looks that it should be much better model than current NMM implementation. In fact, NMMB runs already as NAM model in NCEP. So, I'm very happy to see it in EMS version :D

All this sounds great.
You could explain a little more concerned this new model called NEMS NMM-B?
Is the evolution of MSL? ... Or is another very different model?

It is further evolved WRF NMM, but it works on different grid. NMMB stands for Nonhydrostatic Multiscale Model on B grid. Different is also that "Multiscale" term instead of Mesoscale, so it can work on very broad variety of scales, including global domain. From what I understood, NMMB is not intended to use explicit convection simulation on mesoscale grids, but instead convective parametrization is now used even for resolutions under few kilometers. Developers said it is much better than explicit convection handling like NMM or ARW does. We will see :)

You can find a lot of papers online by searching google for "NMMB model".

Hi all,
anybody knows if the new WRF EMS install script will be emailed or if we should ask for the new one?

It's been a looooong wait, but it seems that Robert is finally ready to reveal the new "NEWR EMS" model package. He posted this on the WRF EMS list:

> Any word on when the next full version will be available. We've been
> on the beta version for quite a while.

Hello James,

The word is possibly by the end of next week. I'm doing the the final
compile & testing this week, and then I have to update the
installation routine and on-line documentation.

Trust me - I can't wait!

Bob

Just as I copied that message I noticed the he answered on April 1st. Please, don't let this be an April Fools' prank.

Soon...very soon..

Robert updated the status on NEWR EMS:

"...I'll try to get it fixed in the next release, which I was hoping for next Wednesday, May 1st. That was before I began updating the documentation though..."

:P

He said something like that a month before... I hope this time it will be for real

However, still without NMM-B.

I hope now for more advanced stuff in there, like WRFDA and nudging... let's see!
