WRF on AMD Sempron?

Post by chilimac » Mon Aug 15, 2011 1:11 pm

I have a newbie question - can WRF be run with an AMD Sempron single processor? (2.7 GHz, 4 G memory) I've tried the ems_install.pl script several times, and I get the following return:
...
...
* Checking http connection to emsdata2.comet.ucar.edu - Contacted

* Connecting to emsdata2.comet.ucar.edu to get requested information

! WRF EMS Inspirational Message #101 - Help Me, Help You

There appears to be a possible problem in that either there are no
releases available on the EMS server or that there was a problem getting
the list of releases.

Either way, I am unable to continue with your request.

...
...

(This is followed by a list of releases available.)

Please advise, and thanks in advance --

Hello, I'm not sure if latest builds have support for these CPUs. Maybe.

What's the exact command you used to run ems_install.pl script?

I used the command suggested by the WRF EMS website as well as the manual for an initial installation:

>./ems_install.pl --install

That got me the result posted in my initial post. It's not clear to me whether I need to include a specific release in the command - the website suggests that it defaults to the most appropriate current release if nothing is specified.

FYI, I'm running Ubuntu 10.04. Before I retired last fall, we were running WRF on a server with this same OS, and the installation was very painless. However, the server used a dual-processor Intel CPU so is not comparable to my home setup.

Thanks for the response.

For what it's worth, the install problem was solved simply by adding --wget to the install command. I found that in a separate thread in the forums, so that makes me a True Believer!

The install just finished. I'll report after I've run a tutorial as to whether WRF is happy with the Sempron.

The easiest way to check out is to start a benchmark case.

Change directory into wrfems/util/benchmark/nmm or wrfems/util/benchmark/arw and from there simply start ems_autorun. If you don't get segmentation fault or similar error until benchmark finishes, then it works :)

OK, the benchmark autorun made some reasonable progress but then produced this error message:
...
...
III. Create the WPS ARW intermediate format files

* Processing nam218 files for use as model initial and boundary conditions - Failed

EMS ERROR : The ems_prep routine /home/chilimac/wrfems/bin/ungrib hath gone
missing! Go find it and don't talk to me until you do!

EMS ERROR : AUTORUN: The ems_prep routine failed in processing the GRIB files to
intermediate format
...
...

My /wrfems/bin directory contains only the following:

-rwxr-xr-x 1 chilimac chilimac 35282127 2010-03-07 11:15 real_arw.exe*
-rwxr-xr-x 1 chilimac chilimac 32618541 2010-03-07 11:15 real_nmm.exe*
-rwxr-xr-x 1 chilimac chilimac 39954862 2010-03-07 11:15 wrfm_arw.exe*
-rwxr-xr-x 1 chilimac chilimac 34152937 2010-03-07 11:15 wrfm_nmm.exe*

FYI, I have both g95 and gfortran installed. Could this be causing a problem?

Thanks very much for your assistance.

I'm pretty much sure that you used wrong installer script to install that version. That would explain why you miss this file. See my FAQ:

viewtopic.php?f=3&t=148
Q: Will an old installer script I have work for newer WRF EMS versions?
A: No. For example, installer for version 3.1 will not install version 3.2 correctly. You should get updated installer script. Either way, with a new installer you can't install old version!

That's a puzzle, as I used the script that was sent to me from SOO when I registered as a new user a few days ago. How can I tell if it's the latest script?

Copy/paste here first commented block from top of the script, I will recognize it.
